Сообщение Short Article Limestone sawing is one of the most important production processes at the limestone quarries, situated around Moscow in the late 19th – early 20th centuries. The sawing method is well described in literary sources and also known from workers’ memoirs. Usually they used big (about 4 meters long) smooth saws without any teeth, installed to heavy timber frames. The sawing was performed with the help of moist sand. The Tethys spelestological club members conducted an experiment to study some features of the limestone sawing process in 2020. The saw model was built specially for the experiment and the club members tried to work with it. As a result of the experiment, the workgroup concluded: the descriptions of the sawing method were understood correctly; the historical saws were so heavy due to the technical development level along with the materials accessibility; working with a well built sawing device is not hard or hazardous; the work speed depends on the sawn rocks, the used materials and the saw thickness. | |
